The electric telescopic boom handler is a type of crane used in the construction industry to support the building of high buildings. With a boom length of approximately 26 m to 49 m, telescopic boom handlers are designed for close quarters jobs.

In the boom operator’s cab, there are two joysticks that control the arm and have a maximum reach of 31m -49m. The boom enables the telescopic boom handler to lift a maximum weight of 4000kg. The electric telescopic boom handler has a maximum radius of 1.95m and 3.75m, which can be increased with a radius extender.

Telescopic boom handers are not self-propelled, but rather are towed by an ATV, golf cart or other similar powered vehicle. Today, Brotherhood College launches telescopic boom handler training in South Africa.

Conventional telescopic boom handlers used in the lifting industry are designed for work in closed areas, with the boom restricted to 90 degrees when in stow position. They are often fitted with a wide array of accessories, which is beneficial when work is being conducted in these closed environments.

However, where alternative access is available, the use of the telescopic boom allows for greater flexibility in reaching heights that are beyond reach of conventional booms.

Although there are manufacturers that produce this type of equipment, they are not readily available to South African students for training purposes. To meet this need, Brotherhood College has designed a curriculum which aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to operate equipment safely within industry guidelines.
